Our Safeguarding Principles for Table Tennis

  1. Prioritize the Welfare of the Individual: The well-being, safety, and enjoyment of every participant, especially children and vulnerable adults, are paramount. Their needs come first in all decisions.

  2. Create a Culture of Openness: Foster an environment where everyone feels safe to speak up, raise concerns, and report any worries they have about themselves or others, without fear of judgment or reprisal.

  3. Zero Tolerance for Abuse: Table tennis is a safe space. Any form of abuse – physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, or bullying – will not be tolerated. Swift and appropriate action will be taken to address any allegations or concerns.

  4. Educate and Empower: Provide regular training and resources to all staff, volunteers, coaches, and participants to raise awareness about safeguarding issues, recognising signs of harm, and how to report concerns.

  5. Clear Policies and Procedures: Maintain a comprehensive and accessible safeguarding policy that outlines procedures for reporting and responding to concerns, risk assessments, and codes of conduct for all involved.

  6. Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO): Appoint a trained and experienced DSO who acts as the main point of contact for safeguarding matters, ensures adherence to policies, and collaborates with external agencies when needed.

  7. Safe Recruitment and Screening: Implement rigorous recruitment processes, including background checks (e.g., DBS checks in the UK), references, and interviews for all individuals working with children and vulnerable adults.

  8. Safe Environments: Regularly assess and maintain the physical environment (e.g., playing areas, changing rooms, travel arrangements) to minimize risks and ensure a safe space for all.

  9. Confidentiality and Support: Ensure that any disclosures or concerns are handled with sensitivity, respect, and confidentiality. Provide support and guidance to those who come forward.

  10. Partnership and Collaboration: Work in partnership with relevant organizations (e.g., Table Tennis England, local authorities, child protection agencies) to share information, access expertise, and ensure the best possible protection for everyone involved in table tennis.

Additional Considerations Specific to Table Tennis:

  • One-to-One Interactions: Establish clear guidelines for one-to-one interactions between coaches and players, including having another adult present or ensuring visibility.
  • Travel and Competitions: Develop specific safeguarding protocols for away matches, tournaments, and international events, including appropriate supervision and accommodation arrangements.
  • Online Safety: Address online safeguarding risks, such as cyberbullying, grooming, and inappropriate content, through education and monitoring of online platforms used by the club.
